Mahindra Marazzo: Mahindra has placed its Marazzo in the heat of action in the MPV war, directly targeting Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – the current leader in its segment.

The Marazzo with its blend of premium elements, space and performance wants to have a significant play in a segment that is somewhere ruled by pragmatism and the high value for money factor.

Unlike Ertiga’s plain styling, the Marazzo style its front end more aggressively along with projector headlamps and bold chrome inserts on its grille. This provides for quite an aggressive road stance that many seem to feel its competitors fall short of.

From the side, you get to see the Marazzo’s big size, which measures 4,585 mm in length, 1,866 mm in width, and 1,774 mm in height.

These dimensions are well above those of the Ertiga which is 4,396mm, 1,735mm, and 1,690mm in length, width and height respectively.

A 2,760mm wheelbase means a planted footprint, giving a roomy cabin, but the Swift’s short wheelbase (2,450mm) also affords it good manoeuvrability, with the turning radius that equals the shorter Ertiga as well.

The premium feel of the Marazzo is carried over to the rear by tail lamps that are styled different and surfaces that are ‘sculpted’, lending it a premium and contemporary look when viewed from the back.

Where the Ertiga is styled according to more conventional terms, the latter makes a visual statement that will catch the eye of those who want to stand out a bit more on the road.

Large and Practical on the Inside

Mahindra Marazzo Get inside the Marazzo and the commitment to passenger comfort is instantly palpable. It can be had in 8-seater and 7-seater (with captain seats in the second row) guises, catering to different needs.

The Ertiga on the other hand is usually offered in a 7-seater format with bench seats in the second row.

Mahindra’s partnership with Pininfarina bears fruit inside the cabin of the Marazzo and the layout feels more premium than one would expect for its price.

Accentuated by the sleek piano black and advanced easy-to-use control buttons, the two-tone layered dashboard delivers a sense of rich appeal and makes the cabin space more functional and versatile1.

One of the advantages of the Marazzo is its spacious interior room. Front, and second row headroom and shoulder room are very good, and the 7-seat version makes the second row crippier with its captain seat config.

But in some surprise and anomaly, the Ertiga has better third-row room in some areas even, with larger shoulder room and seat base figures meaning it may actually be more comfortable than these two for adult passengers over longer trips.

Highly Efficient and Quite Powerful

The Marazzo is available with a 1.5L diesel engine that puts out 121 bhp and a massive 300 Nm of torque. The latter is mated to a slick 6-speed manual gearbox, which put the power efficiently on front wheels.

This engine bay provides the Marazzo with the necessary grunt to shuffle its impressive kerb weight without breaking a sweat, and especially when loaded up with people and luggage.

Efficiency wise, the Marazzo has nothing short of a creditable 17.3 km/l (ARAI rated). Though not as strong as the Ertiga numbers (25.47 km/l for the diesel models), it is very respectable considering the size and power of the Marazzo.

The Ertiga will continue to hold the edge when it comes to powertrain options. Though, the Marazzo is available just with a diesel engine with a manual gearbox, while the Ertiga can be had with the both petrol, diesel and CNG trims, and manual and automatic trims. This flexibility makes Ertiga meet an even wider range of buyer tastes.

Feature-Rich Package

The Marazzo is also packed with a host of features that add to your comfort, convenience and entertainment. The top-end derivative get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, premium audio, auto climate control with rear dedicated AC vents and remote keyless entry.

Comfortable appointments in the cabin include an adjustable driver’s seat, plus multiple storage compartments scattered throughout the interior and conveniently placed USB ports and 12V outlets that keep devices charged and ready for use during extended adventures.

Its dual-zone automatic climate control is especially good at keeping the large cabin comfortable ((pun intended).

In terms of safety, Marazzo scores with a 4-star Global NCAP safety rating and is comparatively safer choice in this segment.

The standard safety kit is comprised of dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, all-wheel disc brakes, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

These safety credentials couldn’t be any more different to the Ertiga, which scored a poor 1-star Global NCAP rating.

Strategic Market Positioning

Mahindra Marazzo Priced from ₹14.59 lakh to ₹17.00 lakh (ex-showroom), the Marazzo is priced as a premium offering over the more pocket-friendly Ertiga that starts at ₹8.96 lakh and goes up to ₹13.26 lakh.

This pricing positions the Marazzo as a gap filler in the MPV segment between the affordable Ertiga and the premium-priced Toyota Innova Crysta.

This positioning is no coincidence; it is intended to appeal to buyers who want the extra space, power and premium features over the Ertiga but don’t want to stretch their wallet to Toyota Innova territory.

All in all, the Marazzo is a better looking car than its prime competitor (to many, the Marazzo in terms of sheer visual appeal is also the better looking car by a lot) and the real value for you comes in the form of the build quality and the safety rating of the car as well as the engine, which is more powerful on the Marazzo.

Adavantages and Limitations of Comparisons

When analysing the two MPVs, there are quite some pros and cons for each as well. What Marazzo does well:
Roominess and Special Features The interior space and comfort of the first and second rows
Construction quality and feel of materials
Safety and crashworthiness (4-star Global NCAP)
Bigger engine producing an increase in torque
Unique styling for that on-road presence
The Ertiga, meanwhile, continues to hold a lead in:
Cost of ownership and ease of operation
All powertrain options are fuel efficient
More engine and transmission options
Improved third-row space for adult riders
Smaller size, easier to maneuver in the city

Mahindra Marazzo The Verdict

The Mahindra Marazzo is a viable alternative as compared our segment leading Ertiga comes at a premium with upmarket interior trims, more space, great power performance and enhanced safety measures.

Its placement in appeal between the mass-market Ertiga and the premium Innova Crysta provides an interesting middle path for buyers who want more than the basics but can do without the premium associated (and paid) to top dollar.

If you are a family that doesn’t compromise safety, comfort and a touch more premium feel, well, the Marazzo does justify its price.

The 4-star safety rating is in itself enough to appeal safety-minded buyers who may be turned off by the Ertiga’s 1-star score in crash tests.

But cost-conscious shoppers who want the most flexibility in powertrain choices or who are regularly employing all three rows with adult passengers may still better appreciate the Ertiga for their circumstances.

Its lower purchase price, superior fuel economy and shockingly efficient third row seating still all add up to making it a rational purchase in the wild west of the local small and mid-size luxury utility market.

At the end of the day, the Marazzo is found to have arrived out of its shell of space in the MPV market by being a unique alternative to the Ertiga, and not just another futile repackaging of the idea of family transportation.

Instead of playing a price-brand game, it instead raises the discussion to include features, safety and style, which matter more to today’s savvy car buyers anyway.

It may not outsell the Ertiga and that’s okay; but it offers a lot of choice to the Indian MPV customer.
